How it works

The first step is hiring an electrician to wire an interlock so you can use your generator safely when the power goes out, and then you can easily switch back to the utility. From there, it’s an easy jump to powering your heat pump with a generator: You simply throw the transfer switch, start the generator, and turn on the breaker you want to use. Be sure to start with a generator large enough to power everything you need in your home when the power goes out. You’ll also want to have a transfer switch to cut off power from the utility and protect linemen from the utility system. Again, we recommend hiring an electrician who has the skills to wire a system large enough to cover all your needs.
